Making your own Homemade Ferret Treats

Buying process ferret meals or treats may sometimes be too expensive to maintain. In some cases ferret owners tend to choose making the treats themselves instead of buying in the grocery store. Making homemade ferret treats is actually simple as long as you are aware of the basic nutritional requirements of your ferret.

Basically, Ferrets are obligate carnivores which mean that their diet solely relies on protein. Their regular diet must only be consisted of food that are high in protein, high in fats and low and fiber. In addition, remember not to give them anything with sugar as this may cause insulinoma in their systems. These are all you have to remember if you are considering of making a homemade treat for your pet.

The normal diet of a ferret is consisted of the following: 32 to 28 percent of protein, 18 to 22 percent of fat and less than 3 percent of fiber. This means that as you prepare your homemade ferret treats, you have to be extremely careful in the presence of any fiber or even sugar. Sometimes, you also have to be aware of other types of protein, such as wheat based protein. Your homemade treats must then not exceed 10 percent of your ferret’s diet. This is to make sure that his normal meals are not disrupted and therefore he can still eat during his regular time. In most cases, giving treats to your ferret at least once or twice in a day is already enough for him.

Some of the most basic homemade treats for ferrets are made up of meat. Remember that ferrets are capable of eating raw meat so it is totally fine if you consider making it their treats. You can try giving baby food that is made from chicken or turkey, making sure that it does not contain high fiber content and absolutely no sugar. Other meat based treats you can give are ground turkey or patty, and even raw organs such as gizzards and hearts.

At times, you can even heat the treat that you have prepared in order to get rid of bacteria.  In addition, you can add a small amount of Ferretone into the treat which basically a food supplement which provides the essential fatty acids for your ferret. Ferrets do love Ferretone and it is indeed suggested that you provide them with it.

Other good homemade ferret treats may not necessarily be in the form of meat. Instead, you can give them non-sweet cereals, raisins, peas and bananas. In addition, you can even provide cat food for your ferret. If you decide on giving such to your pet, you only have to be careful in checking the nutritional value of the treat that you are going to give him.

At times, you can even combine giving them their treats together with training them. It will make the effect of reinforcement a lot easier and better. If your ferret has done a good job in your training lessons, then he gets a ferret treat. This will give him the idea that as long as he acts properly as he is trained, then he can expect treats at the end of the session.
